This photograph of Joan Mitchell taken by Barney Rosset in 1946 transports me to a much earlier age. They married in 1949 in France and settled in Greenwich Village. The couple decided to book a first-class suite aboard an ocean liner departing from Cannes because they had too much luggage and too many of Joan’s paintings. The title is “Red Deer Chandelier” and you can pick out the elements that look like antlers. The Marcliffe Drawing Room is spacious and cozy at the same time. Lots of small groups are nestled into intimate seating areas while a bartender mixes a refreshing cocktail. It’s nice to see a couple of the large Raku pieces on the mantel.
